Mt. Hawley Auxiliary Airport Showcases Runway Extension

Peoria, IL—The Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria (MAAP) will unveil the new runway extension at Mt. Hawley Auxiliary Airport with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18.

The approximately 400-foot extension gives Mt. Hawley a 4,000-foot runway, allowing it to serve a greater array of turbine-powered planes, including all-weather business aircraft and smaller owner-flown single and twin engine aircraft. The airport is now better positioned to serve corporate clients, while still maintaining its appeal for those using Mt. Hawley for personal aviation.

“It’s amazing to me, this place used to have grass runways,” said Director of Airports Gene Olson, who also oversees the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport. “Simply put, the work done here makes the area more attractive to businesses.”

Mt. Hawley Airport provides convenient access to the businesses and growing residential areas of northern Peoria County. The airport, located off an interstate highway, is the only airport in Central Illinois with a flight school and on-site mechanic and aviation medical examiner.

A pilot can take flying lessons, obtain a medical certificate, rent an aircraft or obtain hangar space—all in one convenient location. In addition, the facility hosts the activities of experimental aircraft and hot air balloon enthusiasts.
